The young sculpins found along Vancouver Islands beaches and estuaries are an important food source for sea run cutthroat. I have found that marrying the ingredients of the Rolled Muddler and the design characteristics of the Bullet Head Muddlers creates and especially effective fly for some of my favorite sea run spots.

The head weighted design of the bullet heads give this fly superior sinking qualities and allows the flyfisher to better imitate the darting action of the natural.. The deer and mallard of the Rolled Muddler effectively mimics the color pattern of the young sculpin, which naturally matches the sandy and barnacled bottom of its habitat.

Thread a 5?32 inch silver Cyclops eye (bead) on the hook with the wide side of the hole facing forward (toward the hook eye). Tie a clump of light phase blacktail deer body hair by the butts with the points facing forward at the eye of the hook, and closely trim the butts. Slip the bead forward, snugging it to the hair butts and advance the thread back over the bead. Take a few turns to hold the bead forward, then continue to wind the thread back to the tail. Hook:This pattern may be tied on L053 or Tmc 200#6 or M 9672#8 Tail: The tail is rolled barred mallard flank.
Body: The body is silver diamond braid.
Hackle: The hackle is mallard, tied wet spider style. To finish the fly, pull the hair back over the bead and secure with a few wraps of red thread. To finish the fly, pull the hair back over the bead and secure with a few wraps of red thread. the body to a point just below the head.
